Interview Tips


While your well presented CV, sound qualifications and highly relevant work achievements have obtained an interview for you, it has not got you the job. How you perform in the “face to face” interviews will decide if you get the job or not.

In summary the following applies:

  • Do Your Homework
  • Be Prepared & Organised
  • Be Professional and Politely Confident in your ability

Key Points to Prepare for Your Interview:

  • Do your homework on the company. It is important that you understand the basics of their business, their industry, their products, their size, any news worthy events relating to that company of recent times, etc etc. This can be found via their website, annual reports, industry magazines and the press.

  • Do your homework on the role you are applying for. Review the Position Description and clearly understand the Key Responsibilities and Expectations of the job. Make sure you have examples from your career that will prove your ability to be successful in the “Key Performance Areas”.

  • Prepare in your mind the best examples from your career that validate your ability to achieve the Key Performance Criteria of the role. These examples must be quantifiable and concise. You must also be able to communicate these examples clearly and confidently.

  • Think of the key questions you might ask if you were the interviewer (examples of possible questions are below), then prepare in your mind the responses you would give. It is obviously important to answer the questions asked in a clear and confident manner. Once again if you have examples from your career that support your response, use them.

  • Develop a list of Key Strengths and Weaknesses and be able to discuss these openly. Examples would also be appropriate. Assuming it is possible, the Strengths that you discuss should align with the criteria of the role.

  • Prepare a list of relevant and pertinent questions to ask the client at the end of the interview. The response the client gives to your questions should assist you better understand the organization and role. 

In Relation to Your Interview:

  • Plan to arrive 15 minutes early.

  • First Impressions are critical. So dress appropriately, use a firm handshake and maintain eye contact.

  • Where possible use specific examples to substantiate your responses to the interviewers questions.

  • During the interview communicate in a professional, confident and polite manner. Do not be to casual or to formal.

  • While it is good to be relaxed and comfortable with the interview process, it is important that you maintain your interest in the discussion and communicate with controlled enthusiasm.

  • Do not make negative comments in relation to previous managers or employers.

Possible Questions Clients May Asked at Interview:
(you need to be comfortable in answering these type of questions and be prepared to give examples)

  • Why do you want to leave your current employer? Or why have you left previous employers?

  • Can you tell me a little bit about your career to date?

  • What Management style brings out the best in you? Why?

  • Tell me about the most significant challenge you have faced during your career? What it was? What you did? And the Outcome?

  • Can you give me an example of  a tough decision you have had to make?  What was it?  What did you decide?  Why?

  • What is the achievement you are most proud of during your career? (Don’t forget to quantify your success).

  • What is it about this role and our company that attracts you?

  • What role would you like to be doing in the next 1, 5 or 10 years?

  • If you disagree with your Boss’s approach to something, what would you do?
